Tuesday May 18, 10:02 pm Eastern Time LOS ANGELES--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--May 18, 1999-- Performing rights organization BMI presented the 47th edition of its Pop Awards Tuesday night with ``You're Still the One''; songwriters Mariah Carey, Sarah McLachlan (SOCAN), Matchbox 20's Rob Thomas and Shania Twain; and EMI Music Publishing earning top honors. Hosted by President and Chief Executive Officer Frances W. Preston and Vice President Rick Riccobono, this salute to the creators of the past year's most performed songs culminated in the announcements of Pop Song, Songwriter and Publisher of the Year. In all, BMI Citations of Achievement were bestowed on the writers and publishers of 70 songs during the black-tie gala, staged at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. Twain claimed two of the three most-coveted honors of the evening: ``You're Still the One'' earned the designation of BMI Pop Song of the Year for Twain and publishers Loon Echo Inc. and Songs of PolyGram International Inc. (part of the Universal Music Publishing Group). The Mercury Nashville superstar, whose recording spent 49 weeks on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, co-wrote the song with husband/producer Robert John ``Mutt'' Lange (share not licensed through BMI). Twain also shared the BMI Pop Songwriter of the Year title with Carey, McLachlan (SOCAN) and Thomas, with each writer placing three songs on the most-performed list. Columbia recording artist Carey was recognized for songs from her triple-platinum album ``Butterfly'': the title track plus the No. 1 singles ``Honey'' and ``My All.'' Carey, whose latest album ``Number 1's'' features her 13 chart-topping hits, was the 1992 BMI Pop Songwriter of the Year and claimed the 1991 Pop Song of the Year with ``Love Takes Time.'' Her total of BMI Award-winning titles now stands at 18. Multiplatinum Arista recording artist McLachlan (SOCAN) collected citations for ``Adia,'' ``Building a Mystery'' and ``Sweet Surrender,'' all from her album ``Surfacing.'' McLachlan, represented through the Canadian performing rights organization SOCAN, will be performing on the Lilith Fair tour starting in July. Thomas, lead vocalist of Matchbox 20, wrote the band's hits ``3 AM,'' ``Push'' (second award) and ``Real World.'' The titles are from their multiplatinum Lava/Atlantic debut album, ``Yourself Or Someone Like You.'' Twain's additional songs from her 10-times platinum release, ``Come On Over,'' were ``From This Moment On'' and ``Love Gets Me Every Time,'' bringing the number of her BMI Pop and Country awards to nine. With 16 songs cited, EMI Music Publishing (through its companies EMI-Blackwood Music Inc., EMI-Virgin Songs Inc. and Screen Gems-EMI Music Inc.) enjoyed the BMI Pop Publisher of the Year spotlight for the second consecutive year; Chairman and CEO Martin Bandier accepted the crystal statue. This distinction is given to the publishing concern with the highest percentage of copyright ownership in award songs. This marks the fifth time since 1989 that EMI has claimed this publishing honor. Of the 120 songwriters recognized, 12 were double winners: Art Alexakis, Kevin Cadogan, Bernard Edwards, Greg Eklund, Stephan Jenkins, Elton John (PRS), Wayne Kirkpatrick, Pierre Marchand (SOCAN), Craig Montoya, Stevie Nicks, Nile Rodgers and Arion Salazar. Publishers picking up five or more awards were Sony/ATV Songs LLC (Sony/ATV Songs LLC and Sony/ATV Tree); the Universal Music Publishing Group (Music Corp. of America Inc. and Songs of PolyGram International Inc.); Warner/Chappell Music Group (Pronto Music, Unichappell Music Inc. and Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp.); Careers-BMG Music Publishing Inc.; and Ensign Music Corp. The first performing rights organization to introduce a comprehensive system of logging and payment for songs played on college radio stations, BMI celebrated the tenth anniversary of college radio logging by naming Chumbawamba's ``Tubthumping'' as Most Performed Song on College Radio for 1998. Previously honored as the 1998 BMI/PRS Song of the Year, ``Tubthumping'' was published by EMI-Blackwood Music, and written by the members of Chumbawamba, who are all affiliated through PRS (the performing rights society of Great Britain): Jude Abbott, Dunstan Bruce, Paul J. Greco, Harry Hamer, Danbert Nobacon, Alice Nutter, Lou Watts and Boff Whalley. Seventeen of this year's award songs have won Pop Awards previously. ``You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling'' -- the most performed song in the BMI repertoire with more than 7 million broadcast performances -- picked up its 13th Pop Award for writers Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil and Phil Spector (1965, 1969, 1980, 1989-1997). The Holland-Dozier-Holland composition ``Baby I Need Your Loving'' took its ninth citation (1964, 1967, 1991-1994, 1996-1997), and the 1992 BMI Pop Song of the Year ``When a Man Loves a Woman,'' written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew J. Wright, collected its seventh citation. Among this year's honorees, 26 songs have earned the status of BMI Million-Air (accumulating at least 1 million performances) for a total of 47 million performances. Based on an average length of three minutes, one million airplays is the equivalent of 50,000 hours or 5.7 years, continuously; Million-Airs on the 1998 list translate into 23.5 million hours or 268 years of airplay. BMI's Citation of Achievement is given annually in recognition of popularity in the field of popular music, as measured by broadcast performances on American radio and television; the 1999 Pop Awards eligibility period ran Oct. 1, 1997, through March 31, 1998. BMI, founded in 1940, is an American performing rights organization that represents more than 200,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in all genres of music. Through its music performance and reciprocal agreements, it grants businesses and media access to its repertoire of more than 3 million musical works from around the world. A complete list of the winners of the 1999 BMI Pop Awards follows.
