Stevie Nicks Kicks Off Tour With Old, New

Monday July 09 02:57 PM EDT

(7/9/01, 3 p.m. ET) -- Telling her audience, "this is new, this is old, this is all the stuff I could think of to throw into this," Stevie Nicks kicked off her Trouble in Shangri-La tour over the weekend with concerts in the suburbs of Pittsburgh and Detroit. With special guest Sheryl Crow in tow, Nicks took the crowds through an 18-song, hour-and-45-minute sojourn through her career, with a generous sampling of material from Shangri-La joining her previous solo favorites, as well as some of her best-known contributions to Fleetwood Mac. Kicking off the Detroit show with her first-ever solo hit, the Tom Petty collaboration, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," a fresh-looking Nicks emerged on a stage decked out like the terrace of an Eastern palace, complete with flower vines, gold statues and a backdrop of a window with a seaside view. Nicks, who sported a lacy black dress and frequently changed shawls, led her nine-piece band into "Enchanted" and "Outside the Rain" before hitting Fleetwood Mac territory with "Dreams. " The show took a decided upturn when Crow made a dramatic entrance during "Gold Dust Woman. " Making good on her guest status -- she's performing at a select number of shows on the tour -- Crow performed on seven songs during the set, including two of the Shangri-La tracks ("Sorcerer" and "Too Far From Texas") that she co-produced, two of her own hits ("My Favorite Mistake" and "Everyday is a Winding Road") and an encore cover of Petty's "I Need to Know. "

Nicks thanked the crowd for paying attention to the new material -- six songs from Shangri-La -- and rewarded them with solid renditions of "Rhiannon, " "Edge of Seventeen" and an intimate, show-closing voice-and-piano rendition of "Has Anyone Ever Written. " Nicks's tour continues Tuesday night at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago suburb of Rosemont.
