The AMP NEXT Diner's Chef's Special is a virtual six-course meal for aural gourmands: Tom Petty's 6-CD/cassette box set, Playback 1973- 1993, featuring 92 of Petty's greatest hits, b-sides and rarities, including recordings by Petty and the Heartbreakers as well as cuts from his solo career. Playback 1973-1993 includes three CDs/cassettes of hits and album cuts, drawn from such best-selling album as Damn the Torpedoes, Hard Promises and Full Moon Fever, plus one CD/cassette of rare b-sides and two CDs/cassettes of previously unreleased material. Playback 1973-1993 also features extensive liner notes written by Bill Flanagan (formerly of Musician magazine, now at VH-1), including a complete history of Petty and the Heartbreakers and track-by-track annotation. Playback 1973-1993 is uniquely packaged in a 6x12 box, each individual disc in its own cardboard mini-jacket, with gatefold cover and protective inner sleeve. Disc Four features 15 Petty b-sides, all of which originally appeared on British or European single releases, and all of which are previously unreleased in the United States. They include "Casa Dega"; "Heartbreaker's Beach Party"; "Trailer"; a cover of Nick Lowe's "Crackin' Up"; "Psychotic Reaction" (recorded live, with drummer Stan Lynch on vocals); live covers of the Van Morrison tune "I'm Tired Joey Boy" and the Charlie Rich hit "Lonely Weekends"; "Gator on the Lawn"; "Make That Connection"; "Down the Line"; the instrumental "Peace in L.A. (Peace Mix)"; "It's Rainin' Again"; a live cover of the Eddie Cochran song "Somethin' Else"; "I Don't Know What to Say to You" and "King's Highway" (live).

Disc Five features all previously unreleased performances, including "On the Street," the box set's earliest track, recorded in 1973 in keyboardist Benmont Tench's parents' living room in Florida; "Depot Street," the Heartbreakers failed first Shelter/MCA single, recorded in 1974; "Cry to Me," "Don't Do Me Like That" and "I Can't Fight It," three songs recorded by Mudcrutch, Petty's pre-Heartbreakers band; "Since You Said You Loved Me" and "Louisiana Rain," recorded by Petty, Al Kooper, Jim Gordon and Emery Gordy between Mudcrutch and the Heartbreakers; "Keeping Me Alive" and "Turning Point," studio outtakes from 1982; a 1981 demo of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," without Stevie Nicks; "The Apartment Song," an unreleased 1984 demo with Stevie Nicks; "Big Boss Man" (a 1988 cover of the Elvis Presley hit) and "The Image of Me," also outtakes from 1984; "Moon Pie"; and an early, countrified version of "Damage You've Done."

Disc Six of Playback 1973-1995 also includes all previously unreleased material, with an early version on "Got My Mind Made Up," a song which Bob Dylan would record for his Knocked Out Loaded album; Petty's 1986 version of his "Ways to Be Wicked," which would later be recorded by Lone Justice; "Can't Get Her Out"; "Waiting For Tonight," from 1998 and featuring the Bangles on backing vocals; "Travelin' "; "Baby, Let's Play House" and "Wooden Heart," two covers of Elvis Presley hits, cut while recording new material for Petty's 1993 Greatest Hits album; "God's Gift to Man" and "You Get Me High," from 1991's sessions for Into the Great Wide Open; "Come on Down to My House"; "You Come Through," from the Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) sessions; and "Up in Mississippi Tonight," a 1973 recording by Mudcrutch.
