A Day in the Garden - Andrea's Story Stevie always dedicates Landslide to someone. During her show at Woodstock '98, she went into the audience and selected Andrea for this dedication. Andrea joined Stevie onstage during the song. She shares this experience with us here.
from Andrea: I want to introduce myself, my name is Andrea Marchesini, I am a 27 year old real estate agent, and a fan of Stevie Nicks for the past 10 years. This is an account of my experience in a day in the garden. The day started with anxiety and apprehension, my mother and I drove 3 hours from Northern New Jersey, I was determined to get to Woodstock as early as possible, since there was general admission. We finally arrived at 10:00 a.m. and as we say in real estate location, location, location. I maneuvered my way to the front and I was satisfied because it was about 10 rows from the stage, and I knew that when Stevie performed, I would move up to center front stage....no matter what. The Woodstock crowd was friendly, and I met a lot of Stevie fans. I was looking forward to seeing Don Henley, and expected him to perform a duet of "Leather and Lace" with Stevie, but it never happened. It is now 3:00 p.m. and I didn't care that I had to stand for 2 more hours, until Stevie came on, I was right where I wanted to be. I knew that I couldn't relinquish my post. I was also very nervous and excited because I have never been so close to the stage at any Stevie concert. When Don Henley was on, the crowd began to push forward making it a little uncomfortable. A girl standing next to me fainted and security had to lift her over the barrier. There was a crush of people trying to get as close as possible to the stage, but I held my ground, right against the barrier. This was very important to me, and I wasn't about to move. Finally Stevie came on stage and looked radiant. She seemed very happy and grateful that so many people came out to the concert. By the third song, it started to rain (typical Woodstock weather). I didn't care and wasn't fazed. We were drenched. Stevie kept thanking the crowd for tolerating the weather. She said that Rhiannon was making it rain. She was very relaxed and very talkative, telling jokes and stories. The stage hands kept wiping the stage on their hands and knees she wouldn't slip or fall on the wet surface. The crowd was going wild with her performance, she was spectacular. She was also thrilled with the fact that she had arrived at Woodstock in a helicopter. This was a fantasy of hers since childhood, not to come in a bus or car, but to fly in. In Stevie's relaxed manner, she said that she wanted to dedicate this next song to someone. I expected the person to be her father or a celebrity. She began looking into the audience randomly. At this point, the crowd was going crazy waving and screaming. She zeroed in on me pointing, asking me my name saying, "You, you, you," but she couldn't hear with the roar of the crowd. I was in complete shock that Stevie Nicks was talking to me. I got so nervous. It was like winning the lottery. My heart was in my throat. Instead of the security guard getting my name for her, he lifted me over the barrier, much to my surprise and Stevies too. The guards then instructed me to go over to the side of the stage, I was a woman possessed. I sprinted as fast as I possibly could, Stevie was waiting. I climbed onto the stage and Stevie walked to the side to meet me, she held out her hand and smiled with a warm welcome. I was trembling with excitement, soaking wet, and on stage with my idol. Could you imagine? She made me feel at ease, and I felt like I was meeting an old friend and we hugged. When we were walking towards the mike at center stage, I said something stupid like I was going to have a heartattack and she said to bear with me and that she didn't expect this to happen either. She asked me my name and told me to stand next to her and said that she was going to sing this song to me. She stepped up to the mike holding my hand, and introduced me to the crowd. She said, "This is Andrea." Here I am on stage with Stevie Nicks at Woodstock. Never in my wildest dreams could I have planned this. The crowd was reacting to the situation by cheering and some were even crying because they wanted to be me at that moment. She started to sing Landslide to me, and I thought that I would faint from excitement. During the instrument part of Landslide, she stepped over to me and I hugged her again and I told her how thankful I was that she chose me and that I''ve been listening to her music for 10 years, and that she's been an inspiration in my life. She seemed genuinely impressed and said, "Really" like it was the first time that anyone has ever said that to her. She was so sweet, comforting and reassuring. She ended the song and said to the crowd, "Lets thank Andrea," then she looked back at me and said, "do you think that you could sing in front of all these people?". So I said, "NO," and she said, "I think that you could". She lead me to the side of the stage and we hugged once more. I kept thanking her and she said stand over here which was side stage. As I was standing there in amazement, trying to comprehend what had just happened, a man from RadioWoodstock approached me to do a live interview on the worldwide Internet about what it was like to be chosen. I agreed, but I said that I really wanted to watch Stevie perform the rest of the show. He said O.K. we will wait until she is done performing. Meanwhile, my mother is in the audience screaming, "Oh my God, Thats my daughter, she's going to have a heartattack!!!". Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to bring cameras to the concert, so my mom was frantic because she couldn't record the event. Security brought her backstage so that we wouldn't be separated for the rest of the concert. RadioWoodstock thought it would be a good idea if my mom joined me in the interview. He kept saying that this is a live broadcast all over the world, I didn't need this stress, it was hard enough to control my shaking knees. The concert came to an end while my mother and I stood sidestage. Stevie was very emotional because it was the last show of her Enchanted tour. She held her head in her hands and turned her back to the audience to conceal her tears. She said good-bye ti the crowd, and said that we'll do this again. My mom and I were lead off stage to the interview area. The interview was brief and I was distracted during that time because I saw Stevie being escorted to her van, holding bouquets of flowers, obviously still emotional. Her helicopter was waiting. Everything happened so quickly that my head was spinning and I couldn't believe that she chose me. On the long walk back to the car I was on cloud nine. Fans were approaching me and asking if I was Andrea the girl on stage. They knew me and I felt like I was a celebrity. It's been one week since the event, and I've repeated this story a hundred times, and still I'm in awe of my good fortune. Little did Stevie know that when she chose me, she picked a loyal fan whose dream was to meet her. It was truly a wonderful experience. I say "Thank You" every day. My next quest is to get a copy of the concert, so that I can have it for my personal records, also to prove that it actually happened, because it seems so unreal. Fate truly smiled on me that day in the garden.
